As a Christian, you most likely have already learned that conflict is indeed inevitable. It hits anyone, even the holiest of holies and oftentimes, our responses to this situation make us truly question what kind of Christians we truly are.
One verse that is as a constant reminder is Matthew 18:15-If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
I keep this verse as a strong reminder especially in the occasion when one’s pride is being tested. Pride is a double-edged sword and when we display pride in order to show our dominance among others, in front of others, it not only questions our Christianity but also our sincerity.
Throughout your life, you might have experienced elders displaying dominance upon the younger ones and although their intentions were good; it simply did not have a desirable effect in the long run. However, when you were pulled aside during a few occasions and made to understand the problems of your ways in private, it gave humility and allowed you to understand your faults without shame of what others perceive of you and thus allowed you to heal better. A person who is true to their intentions need not show boastfulness in order to get their point across.
Another verse which is a good reminder for those resolving conflict is Proverbs 12:18- There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing. This is something in which I think all of us need to remember.
It’s funny how words can have such a great effect on people and although there is a saying that goes, “actions are better than words”- one should still not skimp out on the compassion that leaves our lips. It’s wise to always believe in using caution with our words as a soft tongue truly shows concern and the desire for one to change while a rash tongue is simply spewing anger.
And lastly, James 1:19-20- Everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. Truthfully, an angry heart displeases the Lord and therefore, His guidance should be sought throughout all of this.
When we have His intercession in us, it is when we can find peace in our hearts.
