Proverbs 22:9 “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.”

Hebrews 13:16 “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

There are plenty of scripture that discusses helping those less fortunate. Sometimes life becomes so busy that all of our good intentions get pushed to the back burner and eventually forgotten about. It’s not that it is done intentionally it’s just that life has become busier than ever before. It’s time to organize your schedule and make room to devote some time to a charity.

Choosing a charity to help is a difficult task. In your heart, you might feel that you want to help the orphans, hungry, poor, sick and widowed. How do you choose? Where to you begin? Below are helpful tips to guide you to the right charity.

  • What are you passionate about? – Write down all of the things you are passionate about. Are you passionate about education, hunger, sick children, animal welfare or the environment? Be honest with yourself and truly think about your passion.
  • Narrow it down – Most people create a long list. This is a good sign because it means you are yearning to help others in a variety of different situations. Your compassion is admired. However, reality will have to come into focus. Do you have time to dedicate to all of these passions?
  • Choose what you are most passionate about – You might need to narrow down your list to either one or just a few passions. How can you narrow down your passions? Who are you going to scratch off the list? This can be a stressful decision. But there is an easy way to make this decision. Go down your list one by one and write a story next to it that relates to your life. For example, do you want to help the deaf because you were mute when you were a child? Do you want to feed the hungry because you starved during your lifetime? Do you want to help sick children because you were sick as a child?

Choose a charity that truly and deeply means something to you. Then, focus on how you can help this charity. Contact the charity and find out if you can donate money or volunteer your time. If you have a few meaningful passions that are on your list, find out if you can find time in your schedule or budget to help all of them. Follow your heart when you make this decision because this will truly help you make a difference in the world.
