Deuteronomy 15:11 – “There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.”
The world is a big place filled with people who need help. While we pray for everyone to live a life of abundance, the truth is there will always be someone who needs help. Christians are encouraged to learn the signs of someone in need and offer help to the best of their abilities.
Some people hesitate to help others due to shyness and what the other person will think. If you know someone needs help and you have the ability and means to offer assistance take action immediately. If you have concerns regarding the reaction you will receive from the needy person, you can choose to assist them anonymously.
Another common issue that prevents people from giving to others relates to not having enough themselves. For example, if you are just making ends meet and living paycheck to paycheck you might feel that your ability to help others is limited. Financially this might be true.
However, there are other ways to help others if your finances are limited. You can choose to cook a meal and share it with others, donate clothing and home goods that you don’t use and offer your testimony and advice to someone who is experiencing a difficult time that you are familiar with solving. Surely, if you sit down for a moment and think of various ways to help others a long list will appear.
Volunteering is an excellent way to help the needy and give back to your community. In addition, think of specific skills that you have that will beneficial to others. For example, are you great at typing, sales, math, languages or computers? Teaching these skills to someone will help them create a better future. A person who learns a new language or math and computer skills will be on a track to finding a better job. A new job can result in higher income, better living conditions, more food and an overall improved lifestyle. In addition, the person can “pay it forward” by teaching the same skills to someone they know to help them succeed too.
Always seek out the needy and find ways to help them with their various situations. Remember to offer your help with no strings attached and provide assistance with kindness and love.
Galatians 6:2 – “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
