James 1: 5-7 – 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
As we begin this article with this strong verse, it is something that we would wish to endow to anyone whose faith is shaken or questioned whether you are in college, in high school or in any position in your life.
A person’s most crucial time in their life would definitely have to be their time in college- it’s a time when you are figuring out who you are, what you want to be and finally seeing the world through your own somewhat adult eyes.
Studies have shown that there is an alarmingly increasing number of college students who are abandoning their faith within this period in their lives. While it might be because of the changes in lifestyle and influences, the surprising news is that a large factor of this phenomenon is because of what is being taught in their own classrooms.
During times like this, the scriptures remind us in Jeremiah 29:11-13: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’” We need to believe that this is a powerful reminder that we can leave our children when they leave our homes to get a higher education or any time their faith is shaken.
Many children who have grown up in Christian households share accounts of professors challenging their faith and “proving” that everything they have learned and believed in their entire life was, in fact, false, leaving them to question their own faith. In some occasions, renouncing their faith is necessary in order to get a passing grade. However, Psalm 27:13-14 also reminds us- “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.” Many situations in life will have us questioning our faith and it’s all a matter of allowing us to make us stronger or allowing it to pull us away from the Lord.
