Embrace the Adventure: Rediscover the Thrill of Trying Something New

Is your life lacking excitement and adventure? If so, it’s time to ask yourself, “When was the last time you did something for the first time?” Remember how exciting it felt to discover or try something new? Life keeps us busy with routines—working, cooking, cleaning, taking care of family, and enjoying hobbies. But can you recall the thrill of trying something new and absolutely loving it?

One of the most memorable “first-time thrills” for me happened in the early 90s when I visited Costa Rica. I decided to try ziplining—something completely outside my comfort zone. It was exhilarating. The rush of flying through the trees, the stunning views, and the adrenaline pumping through my veins made it unforgettable. What made this adventure even more remarkable was that, unbeknownst to me, I was battling walking pneumonia at the time. Despite feeling unwell, I was so determined and excited that I completed seven zip lines in a single day. It was a goal I had set, and achieving it left me with a profound sense of accomplishment.

Another adventure I embarked on was creating my own softball team. This was a dream born from a place of challenge—while I loved playing softball, I was rarely chosen to play on any team. Even though I wasn’t the best player, I decided to challenge myself by forming my own team. To my surprise, not only did we play successfully for over two years, but we also recruited some incredible players and even won championships! This experience taught me that stepping out in faith and taking action can lead to unexpected success.

A more lighthearted thrill I tried was remote control car racing. I’ve always been fascinated by car racing, but owning a real racing car was far beyond my budget. So, I turned to remote control cars—an affordable yet thrilling alternative. It was competitive and challenging, and even though I wasn’t the best at it, I had an amazing time. The joy came from trying something new and immersing myself in a hobby I loved, even in a smaller, more accessible way.

These “first-time thrills” remind me of the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones and seeking new experiences. As Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Life is full of seasons, and we must make time for exploration and adventure.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to add excitement to your life. Many new experiences are affordable or even free. Whether it’s ziplining, starting a team, or diving into a hobby you’ve always loved, the key is to stay open to adventure.

Ready to add some excitement to your life? Start today by finding one new thing to try. It doesn’t have to be extravagant; the important part is to say “yes” to something new. You never know where that first-time thrill might lead you—or how it might transform your life.
