In Colossians 3:23, the bible states that- Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. This verse is the basis of all our human actions, whether it be working in a professional setting, tending to other people or merely just carrying out our day to day lives.
One of a Christians biggest struggles is living for Christ in the workplace. Sometimes we get so engrossed in our jobs that we forget that we are working for God and not for money. Yes, money is one of the main factors that drives one to work but ultimately, as Christians, we should be working to please God.
As you look at the situation, you might come to realize that secularization of work and Christianity occur because we like to separate things in our lives rather than find a way to make all these things cohabitate. For example, we only go to Church to pray and thank God for all the blessings he’s bestowed upon us but we begin and end this practice within the confines of the church. More so, as we enter work, we tend to only focus on the work, the money which drives us to deliver and what we need to do. However, we forget that Colossians 3:24 says- since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving and since it is the Lord we are serving, shouldn’t there be no separation between our vocation and religion?
A person practicing in the medical field is not called to simply make money but to be an instrument to provide holistic care in honor of the Father. An entertainer is not merely given their talents to make a cheap buck but rather to share their God given gifts to the broken, the weak and those who may need it and the list goes on. Each profession is different and along with this, each of us serves our own purpose in service to the Lord.
It’s true, human as we are we have our own set of responsibilities and needs in life but if we remember what Christ says in Proverbs 16:3- Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans, we will be reminded that if our hearts are in the right place, the Lord will always provide.
